Real-Time Navigation Using the Global Positioning System

For more than a decade, TRW has been involved in aerospace applications of the Global Positioning System (GPS). TRW Ballistic Missiles Division first began working with GPS on a Minuteman missile test flight program in 1980. Since then, TRW has applied GPS to programs such as the Peacekeeper missile, the F-22 fighter aircraft, the Orbital Maneuvering Vehicle, Brilliant Pebbles, and classified satellites. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the application of GPS to real-time integrated missile navigation. We present quantifiable measures of navigation accuracy as a function of GPS receiver parameters. We also formulate some new phase-locked loop (PLL) filter designs, and demonstrate their superiority over more conventional filters.
